Using eHour with AI assistants

Use eHour from ChatGPT, Claude, or another compatible AI assistant to record time, review timesheets, manage projects, and ask questions about your hours.

Your assistant connects to your eHour account and works within your existing permissions. You can start with a simple question, then ask follow-up questions or request a specific change.

Before you connect

An eHour admin must enable access for your account:

  1. In eHour, open Admin → MCP Server.
  2. Turn on Enable MCP Server.
  3. Choose which users or roles can connect.

MCP is the connection standard used by AI assistants. The setting is called MCP Server in eHour, regardless of which assistant you use.

You also need an AI assistant account that allows integrations. Your organisation may require an administrator to allow the connection there.

Connect your AI assistant

ChatGPT

  1. Open Plugins in ChatGPT and search for eHour.
  2. Open the eHour listing and install the plugin.
  3. When prompted to connect, sign in to your eHour account. Review the requested permissions and approve the access you want to grant.
  4. Start a new chat, select eHour, and ask your first question.

If you use more than one eHour account, make sure the browser is signed in to the account you want to connect. See Connected to the wrong account? below if the sign-in step is skipped.

For help finding or installing plugins, see ChatGPT's plugin guide.

Claude on the web or desktop

  1. Open Customize → Connectors.
  2. Choose +, then Add custom connector.
  3. Enter https://ehourapp.com/mcp  as the server URL and name the connection eHour if asked.
  4. Leave the optional OAuth Client ID and Client Secret fields empty.
  5. Add the connector, choose Connect, and sign in to eHour. Review and approve the requested permissions.

To use eHour in a conversation, open the + menu, choose Connectors, and enable eHour.

On Claude Team and Enterprise plans, an organisation owner must add the connector under Organization settings → Connectors first. Each member then connects their own eHour account.

See Claude's custom connector guide for current availability and workspace setup.

Claude Code

Run this command in your terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http ehour https://ehourapp.com/mcp

Then run /mcp  inside Claude Code, select eHour, and follow the sign-in steps.

Codex CLI

For a direct connection, add eHour and sign in:

codex mcp add ehour --url https://ehourapp.com/mcp
codex mcp login ehour

Complete the browser sign-in, then start a new Codex session.

Other AI assistants

Use a client that supports remote MCP connections over Streamable HTTP and OAuth sign-in. The server URL is https://ehourapp.com/mcp . Follow your client's instructions for adding a remote server.

Check the connected account

Before making changes, ask:

Which eHour user am I connected as? Show my name and email address.

Check that the result matches the account you intended to use. Then try a question that does not change anything, such as asking for your timesheet this week.

What you can do

Be specific about the project, task, person, and date range. For example:

  • Review time: “Summarise my hours this week by project and day.”
  • Record time: “Set my total for yesterday on Website Redesign, task Frontend, to 3 hours with the comment ‘Navigation updates’.”
  • Use a timer: “Start a timer for Website Redesign, task Frontend.” Later, ask it to stop the timer and record the time.
  • Submit your timesheet: “Submit my timesheet for last week.”
  • Check team submissions: “Show who in the Design team has not submitted last week's timesheet.”
  • Analyse hours: “Show billable hours by project for last month.”
  • Manage projects: “Create a project called Customer Portal for the existing client Acme.”
  • Find people: “List the active users in the Design team.”

With the appropriate permissions, you can also manage clients, tasks, assignments, users, and teams, or run your saved reports. Team and reporting results are limited to the people and data your account can access.

Permissions and changes to your data

The connection does not give you additional eHour permissions. Your eHour roles, the admin's access settings, and the permissions approved during sign-in determine what the assistant can do.

  • Changes affect your eHour records. Ask for a preview before bulk changes, invitations, or changes to access roles. User invitations and timesheet submissions can send emails.
  • Time corrections can replace existing details. Updating a daily total can change comments and remove tags or individual start and stop times. Use the eHour interface when you need to preserve those details.
  • Submission is not approval. You can submit, cancel, or resubmit your own timesheet through the integration. Approving or rejecting another person's timesheet must be done in eHour.
  • Existing restrictions still apply. Connecting an assistant does not bypass locked periods, budgets, or access rules.

Data returned to your assistant becomes available in that conversation. Follow your organisation's policy for using AI tools and review your provider's data settings. Never paste passwords or access tokens into a chat; use the sign-in screens.

Troubleshooting

Connected to the wrong account?

The connection can reuse an existing eHour browser session without asking you to sign in again.

  1. Sign out of eHour in the browser used for the connection.
  2. Sign in to the eHour account you want to use.
  3. Open your AI assistant's connection settings and reconnect eHour.
  4. Ask for the connected user's name and email again before making changes.

eHour is connected, but tools or data are missing

Check that an eHour admin has enabled the connection for your user or role, that you approved the permissions needed for the task, and that eHour is enabled in the current conversation. Try a new chat after installing or reconnecting.

If a task is denied, check your eHour permissions. The assistant cannot grant itself access to another person's timesheet, project, or report.

The plugin or connection disappeared

Find eHour again in your assistant's plugin or connector settings, install or enable it as needed, and reconnect your existing eHour account. In a managed workspace, ask your administrator if the integration is unavailable.

A client cannot connect to the server URL

For clients that ask for a server URL, use exactly https://ehourapp.com/mcp . An address containing /eh/admin  opens an eHour page and is not the connection endpoint.

A request failed or timed out

Check the affected record in eHour before retrying a change. The change may have completed even if the assistant did not receive a response.
